The Exomax is Excalibur's fastest and most powerful crossbow. It has 225 lb limbs and is rated at 350 feet per second. In testing at my archery proshop we did indeed acheive speeds of 350 - 352 feet per second with Excaliburs carbon bolt and a 100 grain tip. It is great to have a crossbow company rating their bow speeds honestly, several other well known companies (un-named here) whose bows we tested consistantly over-rate their bows by 10-25 fps when tested with their own recommended bolt!

The Exomax uses the same limb found on other Excalibur bow models such as the Phoenix and Exocet 200. To acheive the higher poundage the barrel of the Exomax is built longer so the limbs are pulled back further when latched. Besides the heavier poundage this also increases the draw stroke which contributes greatly to the high velocity.

The drawback to this design is a larger, harder to handle crossbow. Unless you are an extremely tall person you will be unable to keep the stock of the exomax centered in your midriff when cocking with a cocking strap and may be unable to lift your arms high enough to finish the cocking stroke. This makes using the Crank-a-roo cocking device almost mandatory for Exomax users. While it is always fun to have a super fast crossbow many archers find that one of Excalibur's shorter, less powerful models are actually more pleasurable to handle and shoot. We suggest trying the different models at your dealer before making a purchase.
