Modern crossbow bolts are made out of either carbon or aluminum. At one end is a threaded insert that accepts either target or hunting points. The other end is most often fletched with 3 plastic vanes although sometimes feathers are used and is tipped with one of three styles of nocks, flat, moon, or arrow style.

The flat nock is just what it says, a flat end the string pushes against. Tenpoint and Excalibur both use and recommend the flat nock for their crossbows. The moon nock is a shallow notch that centers the string when the crossbow is shot. It is used on almost all other manufacturers crossbows. In our shop we have customers that successfuly use flat nocks on crossbows that recommend moon nocks and ones that use moon nocks on crossbows where a flat nock is recommended. In practice either style will work, however do not mix flat nocks with moon nocks as the nock style can move your point of impact a foot or even more at 20 yards!

The arrow style nock snaps onto the crossbow string just as an arrows does on a bowstring. It was used on older model PSE and Bear/Jennings crossbow bolts, however neither company is currently producing crossbows needing this style of nock. Many of these older models are still in use and most archery pro shops can build crossbow bolts for them if needed.
