There are two main types of crossbow scopes in use today, red-dot scopes and crosshair scopes. Red-dot scopes use a lighted dot (which may be green, red, or offer the option of either) and generally do not have any magnification. Crosshair scopes have some magnification and use a crosshair for an aiming point. Both red-dot and crosshair crossbow scopes are availible in models with one crosshair/dot or with multiple crosshairs/dots. The scopes with multiple reference points allow the archer to sight the crossbow in with the top dot or crosshair and use the lower crosshairs/dots for longer yardage shooting. For most hunting crossbows with velocities of 250 - 350 feet per second the top crosshair/dot should be sighted at 20 yards. This will allow the shooter to hold dead on the center of a deer sized vital area from 0 to 25 yards (or more at the higher speeds) without having to worry about arrow drop. The crossbow should then be tested at longer ranges to determine the yardage for the lower crosshairs or dots.
